New AI Trial Boosting Access to Cancer Care

A new trial in the UK could transform breast cancer screening by using artificial intelligence to speed up diagnosis and treatment. Currently, two radiologists are required to review mammograms for accuracy. The AI system being tested could reduce that to one, freeing up specialists to see more patients and reduce delays.

Around 700,000 women are expected to participate in the £11 million Early Detection using Information Technology in Health trial. Women attending routine NHS screenings will be invited to join the research, which will enhance about 30 screening sites with AI technology.

Breast cancer remains a critical health challenge in the UK, with approximately 55,000 women and 400 men diagnosed each year. The increasing demand for screenings, combined with a projected shortfall of 40 percent in consultant radiologists by 2028, has ephasized the need to expand radiology services. AI is being explored as a key solution to improve capacity and efficiency.

In parallel, the UK government is developing a national cancer plan to improve prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment. This initiative will include targeted strategies for both common and rare cancers, such as those affecting children.

The NHS has made progress in diagnosing more cancers at early stages, where treatment is more effective. However, healthcare experts stress that faster progress is needed. The new plan aims to standardize best practices and incorporate innovative solutions, like AI, to enhance patient care.

Proposed changes to the breast screening process will be carefully assessed to confirm that any new technology is safe and effective before it is widely adopted. This trial and related measures aim to improve early detection and reduce cancer mortality through improved access to timely treatment.
